William Presant & Sussanah Ward with Children Willm Presant b: 1751 married Susannah Ward b: 1762 on January 10, 1779 in Norwich, England at Saint John de Sepulchre church according to the parish records. They had eleven children as well as I can figure, with only seven living into adult age. I will list all of them below:
Sussanah b: 1776, George b: 1780, William b: 1782, John b: 1783, Elizabeth b: 1785, William b: 1786, William b:1788, Charles b: 1790. These children above were all baptized at Saint John the Sepulchre Church in Norwich according to parish records. Mark b: 1793, Philip b: 1797, Mark b: 1799 and Elizabeth b: 1803 (the last four were baptized in St. Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth).
Unfortunately my I have not been successful in making this next generational link backwards in time. The only further information I have about the senior William Presant is that the CHASE's Norwich Directory of 1783 lists: Wm PRESENTS , Butcher, No. 2 St Martins St. Norwich. I have a copy of his will that was proved in 1816 when he died. I also know when and how his wife, Sussanah died. I have a copy of the death registration certificate , which indicates Sussanah Presant's died at age 79 on August 29, 1839 at King Street, Great Yarmouth. The cause of death was cancer of the tongue. Informant of the event was Mark Presant, their son, occupier of the King Street address. their children.....George Presant b: 1780, married Sarah Ward b: 1805 d: 1870. They had five children. At the birth registration of one of the children, the fathers occupation was shown as: Ship Owner/Sailor/Mariner. The certified registration of death shows that Sarah Ward Presant died 1870 at Stone Cottage, Croham, Croydon, County of Surrey at 85 years of age. Cause of death was Old Age Certified and I have his will also. William b: 1782, Elizabeth b: 1775, William b: 1786 and Mark b: 1793 are assumed to have died in infancy because their names are repeated later in the family. John b: 1783 d: 1836 in Gorleston as indicated on the tombstone explained earlier. PIGOT's 1830 directory for Yarmouth shows a John PRESANT as Butcher, Quay & Gorleston. In 1845 at the marriage of his son his occupation is shown as Butcher in Yarmouth. His wife's name is Virtue and they had four, possibly five children. One of them, James Charles, traveled to Ontario, Canada, and this is his link. William b: 1788 is married to Mary Ann Rope d: 1825 in Gorleston. PIGOT's 1830 directory has the following entry for Yarmouth: William PRESANT Saddler & Harness Maker, Gorleston. They had 6 children with Rope or Roope as part of their middle name. Beyond this I don't know that much more about this family and their children. Charles b: 1790 is married to Julianna Leath b: 1786 in Acle, Norfolk. They had five children. They are married in Norwich in 1820. The 1841 census shows his occupation as Butcher in the same city, but the 1851 census shows him as a porter at age 61 at the Beach Victoria Hotel in Yarmouth. Wish I knew more about Charles and his children. It apprears some ended up in London. Philip, born in 1797 is the start of five generations of Philip Presant's and are featured here. And this is who I am related to. Mark b: 1799 is shown in the 1851 census as a Butcher in Yarmouth. He is married to Elizabeth Grimble and they had nine children. This is also the same Mark shown above taking care of his mother at the end of her life. It seems the children stayed and lived in the Norwich and Yarmouth area. There is a known Presant relation living today that can trace their connection through some Walter Presant's around Norwich and Norfolk. Elizabeth b: 1803 married a James Samuel Chamberlin in 1818 at Yarmouth. They had six children in the Yarmouth area. Some of the information on the Chamberlin family comes from Australia where at least one child emigrated. I do not know much about this side of the family. |
